Heat Cable with Thermostat

Next Previous

Heating Cable for plant propagation and seed raising

A propagating bed consists essentially of a thermostatically controlled heating element (mounted on mesh) buried in a layer of moist sand typically in a pre-prepared box by the grower. Heat then permeates through the sand providing a warm growing environment and microclimate. Or Heating Cable may be used on the ground. However it is essential to place 50mm polystyrene sheeting on the ground for insulation. If you wish to purchase the Heating Cable unmounted please make a note on your order. If using unmounted cable, ensure your spacings are approx 100mm apart for even heat distribution. Use mesh for mounting.

Specifications: approx 150 watts per square metre (custom made available to any output required) 240 Volt. Thermostat controller is factory fitted to accurately control temperature.

The Benefits:

Extremely safe to use

High seed germination

Low operating cost

Vigorous root development for cuttings and potted plants

Ability to plant directly into sand mix if required

Durable, very long lasting

Australian made by Adloheat - made to Australian standards

The Facts:

The above heating is used in conjunction with a thermostat to pre-vent temperature rising above the optimum. The thermostat should be placed horizontally across the runs of cable and just below the surface of the bed or at the root level. A temperature of 16-23 oC is usually sufficient depending on the plant type.

1. Roll out cable into pre prepared box. If cable is unmounted attach to plastic mesh at approximately 100mm spacings.

2. The propagating box should have sides approximately 150-250mm high and a solid base of insulating material.

3. At least 5-6mm thick polystyrene should be used in the bottom and on the sides to help reduce heat loss and minimise running costs. 50mm for ground installation.

4. The cable should be laid in the box with approximately 40-50mm of coarse damp horticultural sand above and below the cable. Seedling trays or pots should sit on the sand and be packed tightly together. Do not place polystyrene boxes on top of the cable.

5. Do not fill the bed with insulation materials such as perlite, peat, vermiculite, fibre, ash, clinker or moss. For even distribution of heat, the sand must be kept damp at all times.

6. Place the thermostat sensor probe into the sand. Its best to keep to probe in a position where it won't be constantly moved or knocked out of position.

7. Plug lead into a powerpoint and set the desired temperature using the dial on the thermostat. Or if using a Digital thermostat no need to set the temperature, it is pre set at the factory at 23 degrees C.

Note: A safety switch on the circuit is highly recommended for added safety
